The magnesium oxide heaters need up to 10minutes to get to their maximum heat, emits a softer heat very pleasant to relax.

Magnesium Criteria Quartz
longer 1.4-3μm wavelength shorter 07-1.4μm
400°C temperature 700°C
shallow penetration deep
long pre-heat time short

Why is there no light when I switch from quartz to magnesium?

Magnesium heaters do not emit visible light in addition to the infrared radiation.
